Questions & Answers

Q) Can citrus trees be planted in pots?

A)
Yes. And contrary to popular opinion, there is no need to get a dwarf tree. Any type of citrus tree can be planted in a pot and because its roots will be contained, it will stay on the smaller side. Make sure you use a large pot at least 26” high and 26” wide. The only citrus tree I don’t recommend for potting are grapefruit because the fruit is so heavy but it can work if fruit is controlled. Be sure to plant it correctly and fertilize monthly!

Q) What can I put in the bottom of a very large container so that I don't have to fill it full with potting soil?

A) There are a couple of options for large containers. However, if you are planting a tall tree/plant in the pot, you must fill it with soil to counterbalance the weight. An alternative solution is to use a nursery can turned upside down, or fill it with packing peanuts covered by landscape cloth. The latter is so the peanuts do not "float" up when the pot is watered.

Q) I am actually looking for some simple  work to be done at my home The yard hasn't been weeded in awhile There are also two sick cacti that I would like to have some advice on Is that something your company would provide?

A) Our services include design, installation and care of potted gardens, raised beds and small courtyards. we do not do yard maintenance but I would be happy to take a look at your cacti and take a sample or photo back to one of the local plant experts we work with to see what they would recommend.

The best way to control weeds in yards is a two-method approach. In January have your area sprayed with a  pre-emergent herbicide which prevents the seeds of the weeds from germinating. Exterminators and landscapers provide this service and it is very affordable and saves you a bundle of time, money and energy. Then throughout the year for the few weeds that do come up, they can be sprayed with a weed killer (like Roundup). This kills weeds by going through the foliage and down to the root so it is a contact treatment. What I like to do is buy the concentrate and then mix it a little stronger than the directions for a better application.  ( Be cautious with this strong chemical.)
