The Impact of

Shopping Locally

  • Spend $100 locally and $68 stays here compared to $43 spent in a national store or restaurant
  • Small businesses create 75 percent of all new jobs.
  •  Locally owned businesses reinvest 60% more back into our community than chain stores.
  • This generates more tax dollars into our schools, law enforcement, fire protection and road improvement.

The Contained Gardener has been doing business locally for 12 years now!

Greetings!

Wow - that was a cold one!

Snow Wreath Pyracantha
Well - not this cold (Jan 07)

Our average first freeze is usually around November 15th but I think the one we had last week was the deepest freeze I have experienced in Tucson in the 16 years I have been here. It's one thing when it hits 32 degrees, but seeing temperatures in the teens was quite a shock to my system - not to mention our plants!! {See below for some frost preparation tips.}

It's easy to Shop affordably, Locally

Each time I venture out to eat, shop or play I always make sure to spend my money at a locally owned business.  Often, chain stores try to woo us with their discounted prices but it's easier than you think to shop locally and affordably.  Before I shop, I check my stash of coupons and special offers or I go online to the merchant's website to see if there are any offers I may have missed.  Like you, I work hard to earn a living in Tucson and I like to make sure I spend it where it will do the most good. (To see why it matters read the sidebar to the left)

The bottom line is----we can shop locally and still save.

I am looking forward to a fabulous 2011 for all .
I hope you will join me in this wish!

Talk about Micro - Climates!! During the recent freeze, even the soil in some of our plant containers here at our yard at Ft Lowell and Tucson Blvd was frozen solid as were many of our plants including the Sky flower,  and yet the same plant at a client's home in Starr Pass was completely untouched by the cold!

Even around your own home, it's totally possible to have extremes in temperatures in "mini" microclimates.  Elevations, nearby washes, hardscape, and orientation of your home all contribute to this phenomenon. If you learn to pay close attention to the differences around your home and in your neighborhood, you will develop a sense of what plants do well for you and what you need to protect in the event of a freeze or frost alert.

Tips for preventing frost damage:

  • Water the plants well the morning before possible frost/freeze.
  • Cover with frost cloth. Tie or fasten the bottom so that the air does not get under it.
  • Bring potted plants that are very tender close to protected walls, under carports, in garages or inside if possible.
  • Do not use plastic covers.
  • Use Styrofoam cups on columnar cactus tips.
  • Wait to cut back frost damaged branches until March!!

Roses

Information provided by the Tucson Rose Society
  1. Water weekly, if we get no precipitation.
  2. If you purchased bare root roses and have planted them in pots, it is best to move them to a protected area if the weather gets below freezing. All established roses that are in the ground require no winter protection in AZ.
  3. Begin now to plan for roses that will need replacing or relocating.
  4. Pruning needs to be completed by Feb 10, so enjoy a month of relaxation until then!
No matter what the job is - large or small, seasonal or year round, give us a call and lets see how we can help. Our goal is to create your special oasis of color with unique potted gardens providing you with beauty, peace and pride 365 days a year.
