Moving into Summer Potted Gardens

Re-potting season begins the last week of April and planting will continue through the first half of June. Gardens will be completed on an as needed basis. If you are not on our list, call today as available slots are booking quickly!

Time to check your irrigation system

  • Check your system for leaks.
  • Review past water bills to track your usage - look for any obvious changes.
  • As the temperatures increase, make appropriate changes to the frequency and duration of your watering schedule
  • Do Not ASSUME... we need ½" of rain to be safe in turning off the irrigation for any length of time. Your pots will need water again in two days. Don't forget to turn it back on!

Greetings!

I would like to take a moment to say Thank You. Many of you have done business with us over the past 11 years and as the owner of a local business, it means so much. As you know, we are a Preferred Purveyor member of the Tucson Originals and we are pleased to let you know we have also joined Local First - a wonderful grassroots association whose mission is to promote, support & celebrate Arizona's locally owned businesses. I encourage you to visit their website and learn about the many wonderful locally owned businesses that are members of this rapidly growing organization.  When you shop local, your dollars stay in Tucson and that helps us all!  Tucson's small, locally owned businesses rock!

Have you ever eaten at Tucson's own
Jonathan's Cork - Fine Southwestern Dinning

This Tucson Original restaurant should be on your list of favorite locally owned eateries. You will notice our handiwork on their comfortable patio where we've been planting and caring for their potted gardens and enjoying Chef Landeen's fabulous food for years.

At Jonathan's you can enjoy some of the best cuisine in Tucson, from the freshest seafood (yummy lobster tails- my personal favorite) to fabulous game meats, soups, salads and more. It's also a great place to go after a game or show for Jonathan's late night menu.

Extra - Recipe directly from Jonathan!
Rockshrimp, cucumber and raspberry vinaigrette salad

Serves 6-8

2lb of cooked rock shrimp (chilled)
2 medium cucumbers peeled, seeded and diced large
1 medium red bell pepper medium diced
1 red onion medium diced
1 cup of extra virgin olive oil
¼ c raspberry vinegar
Juice of ½ lemon
½ tsp. of Dijon mustard
Pinch of salt and pepper
Red salad Savoy leaves

In a medium glass bowl mix mustard, lemon juice and vinegar. Blend in olive oil to smooth consistency, continue stirring and add salt, pepper, bell pepper and onion. This dressing is then tossed with the cucumber and allowed to rest one hour in the refrigerator. Check the flavor and add additional salt and pepper and a little bit of sugar if you would like. Toss in rock shrimp, place one or two salad Savoy leaves in a large martini glass and fill with shrimp cucumber mix and serve.

*If rock shrimp is not available (Hurricane Katrina) you may use 71/90 count peeled and deveined white shrimp.
Rose Care from Tucson's Rose Society
Rose Care

1. Fertilize

Be sure to water your roses thoroughly the night before you fertilize them

Establish a regular fertilizing schedule for your roses starting this month with both organic and water soluble fertilizers:
  • Start with and then monthly: Max Magic Mix or homemade compost (about one cup per bush the first week
  • Bi-weekly: Dilute your water soluble fertilizer (Miracle Grow, Peters, Scotts, etc) as the instructions state and shower your fertilizer using your hose.
  • Monthly  Additionally, be sure to apply a dose of fish emulsion once a month
2. Pests and Fungi: aphids and mildew
  • Spraying your roses off with water a couple of times a week will help reduce the aphid population. If a colony has gotten started, use Bayer Rose Spray or Safer Insecticide once a week per bottle instructions to wipe them out.
  • When the weather gets warmer, the dreaded Thrips will appear. They attack the rose blooms and turn them brown. Using a small plastic spray bottle, spray the buds directly with your chosen insecticide above, as they begin to open. Do this at least once a week.
  • Mildew can be kept in check by using a good fungicide. It is best to apply fungicide as a preventative for mildew on a weekly basis, rather than waiting for the problem to show up. It's harder to prevent damage once it's started.
3. Water - Daytime Temperature guidelines
  • 70's water every 5 - 6 days.
  • 80's water every 4 - 5 days.
  • Your roses should be receiving 10-15 gallons of water each time you water. You can calculate this by the size of the emitter (e.g. 1 gal/hour) x the number of emitters x duration of watering cycle) This should provide water to a depth of 18-24 inches deep, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. The soil should not dry out between waterings.
  • Continue to water your roses and increase the frequency to three times per week as the temperatures increase.
4. Mulch
  • Begin putting down mulch to keep soil from drying out in the hot days ahead.
No matter what the job is - large or small, seasonal or year round, give us a call and let's see how we can help. Our goal is to create your special oasis of color with unique potted gardens providing you with beauty, peace and pride 365 days a year.
