Tips and Updates
February 2010
Greetings!
Adobe Rose window

I am looking ahead to this month's calendar and see so many wonderful things happening in Tucson! I hope I might see you at one of the events or in one of our local restaurants!

Getting the year started on the right foot here at The Contained Gardener, we recently held our first overnight staff retreat at Adobe Rose Bed and Breakfast in midtown.

While there we had a wonderful time with hosts Marion and Jim Hook and had the opportunity to redesign the potted gardens around their beautiful pool area. I am sure that their guests are now enjoying the patio even more than before!

During this busy season, it is important to take time to relax and enjoy our gardens too. As your schedule gets full, if your pots need some attention and you just do not have time, give us a call and let us help you out.

Potted Garden Care in February
 1.Fertilize your citrus this month
        (note:
newly planted trees do not need fertilizer the first 1-2 years after planting).

Whether you use Ammonium Sulfate, Ammonium Phosphate or Citrus Food fertilizer it's important to read instructions because the amount of fertilizer need per year will vary depending on the age, size, and type of citrus tree. For example, a medium-sized adult tree 5-6 years after planting needs 6.2 pounds of Ammonium Sulfate per year (split into three applications). Grapefruit trees 5 or more years after planting need half the amount for other citrus.

2.     Do not be tempted to prune back frost damaged plants yet.

We need to wait until the danger of frost is over (average date March 15)

3.     Watch for a surprise frost and cover tender annuals.

4.     Deadhead your flowers weekly.

 Rose Care for February

Rose Care from Tucson's Rose Society
 1.  Pruning of your roses should be completed by mid-February. Once you're done pruning, be sure to clean up all the old mulch and dead leaves and throw them in the trash, not your compost pile. Dead leaves can often have mildew spores and other diseases on them that can infest your compost pile and create problems later on.

2.
Apply both a pesticide and a fungicide to your pruned roses
and the ground around the plants. Fungus spores such as mildew can live through the winter in your soil.

3.
Apply long-term or organic fertilizer, such as Max Magic Mix, Bandini Rose Food or homemade compost. Also, it helps to add superphosphate at this time since it takes a while to break down. Scratch it into the soil and water in.

4.
Two weeks following the long-term fertilizing, begin your regular short-term or liquid fertilizing program.

5.
Once growth appears, start in on your hose spraying program in the mornings to keep the aphids and mildew away.

6.
Continue to water your roses. As daytime temperatures increase, increase your watering frequency.

No matter what the job is - large or small, seasonal or year round call us if there is any way we can help you. Our goal is to create your special oasis of color with unique potted gardens providing you with beauty, peace and pride 365 days a year.
